3 Tips to Succeed in Medical School
3 Tips to Succeed in Medical School The following piece was written by Dr. Sahil Mehta. Sahil has been featured in ourAdmissions Expert series and is a former admissions interviewer for Columbia University. He is the founder of MedSchoolCoach. So, youve gone through the application process. Youve written your personal statement, put on your best suit, shared your personal stories at your medical school interview, and just got that email or phone call saying you are in! Congratulations! That is an amazing accomplishment getting into medical school is probably the hardest part of your journey. But there are plenty of trials and tribulations that lay ahead. As a medical student, you will be expected to do things you never thought you could. On the wards, youll be looked upon by patients as their doctor sometimes, even though you may have just Googled their disease five minutes before meeting them! Relax everyone goes through it, but here are three basic tips on how to succeed in medical school. 1. Read every night Medical school will throw a mountain of information at you. From anatomy to physiology to pathology, youll be constantly bombarded with new material. The best thing you can do is to stay on top of your daily classes. Read every day so that you are not left having to memorize all of anatomy the night before your final. Its more important than you think many of you may have been able to succeed in undergrad by simply cramming for tests. That becomes harder and harder in medical school, as the amount of information is enormous. Take two hours every day to review the material you learned in class and to preview the next days lectures. Medical schools have great online resources and lectures, so its easy to know what is coming. 2.Understand what you can, rather than memorize A lot of medical school is about memorizing facts, whether it be anatomical locations, drug dosages and interactions, or the cell cycle. But whenever you can, try to understand the material, rather than memorize it. Why is the left recurrent laryngeal nerve important clinically? If you ask yourself that question rather than memorize where it goes, youll remember the material much longer, and it will be much more relevant to you when you get on the wards! 3.Form study groups Medical school is a great time to make new friends, but given your eight hours of class and two hours of reading every night, that doesnt always leave much time. Remember that studying can be a social activity. Get your friends to study with you, quiz you, and help you understand the material. Unlike college, every one of your friends in medical school is taking the same classes as you, so use it to your advantage. Small group learning is essential for success in medical school and in medicine in general! There are many more ways to succeed in medical school, but hopefully this short list will get you started! Best of luck in the future. Remember, while the hardest part may be over, there is still plenty more work to be done as you continue on your journey to become a physician. Office Romance Pitfalls, Problems and Warnings - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Office Romance Pitfalls, Problems and Warnings - Introvert Whisperer Office Romance: Pitfalls, Problems and Warnings There is no age group immune to the potential of an office romance. There is also no way of telling how one will turn out and the impact it could have on you and your career. If it happens to you and you are in those early stages of discovery, itâs also somewhat impossible to keep your head about you to realize the can of worms you may be opening up. Workers get into these relationships every day and everyday people get fired, sued and derailed by what seemed so right. Office romances can spark easily because of the proximity, frequency, and availability of like-minded people. You have many things in common with your co-workers, and when you add the sexual attraction that comes with it â" POW! This also falls into the category of things your mother never told you. People donât talk about this issue all that much, so you may not realize what the issue is. Granted there are places, like law enforcement, where âfraternizationâ is encouraged. These are the exception, because those jobs demand employeesâ time and commitment at a level most people outside of that community donât understand. Iâm not addressing those work environments. The situations I am addressing are quite common and here are some serious things to consider: Company Policy Many companies have policies that address their tolerance of inter-office dating. Some companies will go so far as to terminate the offending couple. Violating policy is clearly a career-damaging act even if you donât get fired. It also doesnât do much to enhance the relationship. Sexual Harassment If one person is in a position of authority or management, dating can be perceived as anything from sexual harassment to favoritism by the peers. Even if both people enter into the relationship voluntarily, you have to think about the worst-case scenario. What if the relationship breaks off and the subordinate in the relationship decides to claim sexual harassment? Itâs hard to think things will go bad, but itâs in that context where the worst is likely to happen. You have to also consider the favoritism reaction. The peers will start grumbling amongst each other, and it will eventually work its way up the food chain. When it arrives at the higher upâs office, most likely there will be demands of fairness, missed opportunities and a whole list of issues. While none of this is likely to be valid, the perception is the reality for others and that will weigh heavily on many peopleâs minds. Your judgment is now questioned. Not good. Performance perception As people in the office start noticing the lunch and coffee breaks, they will also start creating stories about both of you slacking off. This creates a dysfunctional environment, because they may not trust that you are focused or as committed as you were before the fling started. When you miss something (which we all do periodically), it will confirm their belief about you. Youâve now created your own perception issue. Letâs not forget, this is a romance thing The statistics arenât in your favor that it will be a long term relationship. When it stops and youâre still working together, you are now faced with working with an EX. It wonât matter who had the break-up idea, facing each other will be difficult. The post break up could negatively impact your performance, which you may be powerless to change. You are faced with a minimum of uncomfortable situations to a maximum of not holding it together well enough to do your job. Itâs understandable how an office romance can develop. However, there are so many compelling, career- changing reasons to avoid them that I hope this serves as an early warning to stop and take a breather before going further. Phone Safety
Phone Safety Phone Safety ChaptersPhone Security MeasuresMonitor Online Accounts and Social MediaLimit App DownloadsThink Before You WriteSince a lot of us spend half of the day glued to our mobile phones, and the other half having them within reach, itâs worth considering the idea of phone safety.Phone safety refers to how you can keep your personal information, and your location private, at all times.Due to the fact that pretty much any phone these days can act as a beacon emitting your location to the world through GPS tracking, itâs prudent to read up on how you can prevent disclosing too much information about yourself. On top of location tracking services, phones can act as a gateway to all of your personal information. Whether you have such information stored in your notes (you probably shouldnât) or in social media accounts or messages with people you trust, there is always a risk that it could be compromised. In order to help you protect your personal data and stay safe with your technology, weâ ve compiled this list of actionable steps you can take right now towards a more secure relationship with your phone. You can stay safe online with our guide, and with the following steps. They wonât be able to access your private accounts, nor download Angry Birds onto your phone without your consent. When possible, choose the more complex option when it comes to creating a passcode. Just like with a password, the longer a passcode is, the harder it is to crack.Take care with the passcodes that require a specific movement to unlock, since these can be relatively easily replicated by anyone who sees you do it.Deactivate These FeaturesSmartphones these days are full of features. Some exciting, some redundant, and some downright scary at times.Location SharingLocation sharing falls into the latter category. Ever taken some photos in your back garden, only for your phone to categorise them under the name of your hometown without you asking it to?Thatâs because phoneâs are equipped with the latest in GPS technology, which allows them - and phone companies - to know where we are at all times. Since we tend to always have our phones on us, it can seem like thereâs no escaping it.Whatâs more, this location s haring feature will give away your location to any apps you decide to download on a whim. That could be bad news, since thereâs something unsettling about the fact that dozens of companies essentially have access to your exact location at all times. However, donât worry, there is a simple fix: turn off the location sharing setting. LifeHacker has a great article on how to turn it off in case you were wondering. Once youâve done this, youâll not only be grateful for the extended battery life, but youâll also feel a lot safer in the knowledge that your every move isnât being tracked.BluetoothOnce youâre satisfied that you arenât giving away your location to everyone whoâs interested, the next feature you should turn your attention to when it comes to phone safety, is bluetooth.Something which is always activated, yet rarely used, itâs worth asking yourself if you really need to have your bluetooth turned on all the time.Bluetooth is great for pairing your phone with your car to play music, or linking up to your headphones so you can go wireless for your workouts, but it also opens the doors to other people.By that I mean, people can access your phone via Bluetooth. If you have it on at all times, youâre essentially inviting people to try and hack into your phone. The best solution to this, is to keep it turned off. Of course, there will be moments where you want to use it, which is fine, but when youâre not make sure to switch it off again.Think of it as a light in your home. Turn it on when you need to use it, then switch it off again when you donât.Check your Privacy SettingsLastly, regarding easily fixed security issues with your phone, you should review your privacy settings, and make sure they are to your liking.Acting as a safeguard against potential security issues, the privacy settings are there to help you take control of your phone safety, and stay on top of any threats. The main things you can do through the privacy settings wil l be related to the apps you've downloaded. By restricting the access they are granted, you will be able to feel more at ease, and give away less personal information.Monitor Online Accounts and Social Media Keep tabs on your online accounts.Something you may not have considered when it comes to personal safety, and keeping your information private, is the accounts you are connected to.Due to the fast-moving nature of work and society in general, we often find ourselves flitting from e-mail account, to social media account, to bank account. The fact that we can do this so easily its highly convenient. However, this can come at a cost.If youâre not careful, youâll leave the door open to your private information by not logging out of your important accounts.Phones are designed to make our lives easier, but that doesnât mean safer. The option to save our login details and keep us connected to our accounts through our device can be great, but it can also grant strangers access to them should we lose or misplace it.To remedy this, itâs advisable to manually log in and log out of all your accounts, especially those which contain sensitive information.Apps are the worst offenders in some cases, since they will encourage you to save your details and make the process more streamlined.Limit App Downloads Apps are great, but think before you download.Speaking of apps, itâs best to err on the side of caution, and limit yourself to a select number of them.Donât get me wrong, apps are incredible, and their utility at times is unquestionable. However, the more apps you download, the higher the chance that you will stumble across something unsavoury. Most apps wonât affect your phone, or compromise your personal data, but every now and again, a dodgy app can slip through unnoticed and pass on malware to your phone. As a result, you should stick to fewer apps, and that way give less people access to your information.Even if your location sharing is already turned off, apps will still have quite a lot of access to your information. Unless, as we said earlier, you manage the app permissions in your privacy settings, which I would highly recommend.I know itâs tempting to want every fun game or useful app on the store, since there are so many, but if you value phone safety then you should ensure you place limits on the number of apps you download.Think Before You WriteAside from calling, texting, and generally keeping up with people, another reason we want our phones with us at all times, is to take notes and store useful information. For example, youâre on the bus and youâve just remembered something really important you have to do when you get home. What do you do? Write it in the notes application I imagine. This is all well and good until it comes to sensitive information. Just like you shouldn't really write down your credit card PIN number, or your passwords on paper, you shouldnât write them in your phone either. As incredibly convenient as it is to have all of the important information you need at your fingertips, itâs never a good idea to have such information somewhere people can find it.All youâd have to do is lose your phone, leave the bluetooth on a moment too long, or be unfortunate enough to have it stolen, and all that information will be comp romised. This applies to messages too. If youâve ever sent personal information like bank details or your home address out to friends or family, then you should go back and remove evidence of these interactions, to preserve your data. The gist of it is, only store on your phone what you wouldnât mind someone seeing should push come to shove. If you follow this rule, then you shouldnât have any problems with phone safety.

Learning English Writing Martin Luther King
Learning English Writing Martin Luther King Writing in English can often be a students worst nightmare-but dont worry, LOI is here to help! Who better to help us discover the best ways to combat writing than one of the greatest speech writers of all, Martin Luther King. Lets watch the video below up to 4:00.I hope you found that inspiring! So, lets get to work and try to match MLKs great speech by copying some of his techniques to engage people. Your friends and colleagues will be impressed with your excellent writing skills in no time! The first point that is mentioned is alliteration that means when you begin words with the same letters or sounds. My friend Larry has a lizard who likes leaping leopards and alliteration also. Can you see the alliteration in that sentence? Alliteration draws attention to a specific line in your writing, signifying the importance of the repeated letters or words. It is often used in the media (newspaper headlines) and in advertisements to capture peoples imagination, and also in poemsLets look at some examples;Aliceâs aunt ate apples and acorns around August.Carries cat clawed her couch, creating chaos. As you can see, the examples use the letter for the majority of the words in the sentence. However, the best way to spot alliteration is to say the sentence aloud and listen for the words with the identical consonant sound- for example, the first sentence is easy- almost all the words have a short a sound.Lets try a few examples of our own- can you finish these sentences with your own words to make an alliteration? As always, write your answers in the comment section, and well respond!Fred had ______________ fun with his family.Anns angry aunt ate the _____________.Dans dog _________ the drink ______________.She shook the __________ with so much strength that it _____________.Mikes milkshake ____________ while Michelle made _____________.Good work! As mentioned before, alliteration is often used in advertisements-particularly in brand names such as Dunkin Donuts an d Coca-cola. Can you think of any other brands that use alliteration? What about famous people? Another way we can use alliteration is in phrases such as neck and neck (meaning to be level in a race), write a phrase in the comment section to show your alliteration expertise! Now lets go back to our video of Martin Luther King. As you can see, the next technique he used when writing that incredible speech was something called anaphora. That means that a word in the text/speech refers back to other ideas in the text/speech for its meaning. An easier way to achieve cohesion (that means, to stick your writing together), is to use pronouns to refer back to the noun that has already been introduced. Lets begin with an easy example; âI went to the restaurant with Jo on Sunday. She looked awful. Who does the she refer to in this sentence? Thats right, it is talking about Jo. Lets look at this example:John was late for class again. The teacher put John in detention. John was late for class again, so the teacher put him in detention. Can you see how I connected the sentences together with the word so, and referred back to John with the pronoun him-as we are still talking about a John (if you have forgotten which connectors to use, look at these great posts here and here. This makes our sentence much more fluent and easier to read. That was an easy example, now lets try some more complex sentences where we replace nouns with pronouns. For this exercise, you are going to join the two sentences together to form one sentence, using a pronoun to replace the noun. Write your answers in the comment section to see if you completed the exercise correctly.Laura and Sarah are going to New York. Laura and Sarah will go by plane. There are many environmental problems in the world today. Many environmental problems are difficult to solve.Thomas bought 2 cheeseburgers. Thomas ate 2 cheeseburgers. If you look at the table below, more examples are shown to change a noun phrase to pronouns. Can you create some sentences (you can connect them in separate sentences) to show you are a master of writing coherent text?noun phrasepronounThere are some people who think that Martin Luther Kingâs speech was the greatestâ¦â¦One argument they make isâ¦â¦At the time, there were a number of problems in the USAThe biggest of these wasâ¦.Several scholars have analyzed Martin Luther Kingâs speechSome of them have given better descriptions of the language used than othersâ¦.It is important to consider not just the effects the speech had at the time, but also the effects it has had on current generationsâ¦.Both of these effects are equally importantâ¦.We hope you enjoyed todays blog post. Parent-Teacher Conference Stress
Parent-Teacher Conference Stress End-of-year parent-teacher conferences can make some parents nervous and they might be stressful for you too, particularly when meeting with parents of students who are struggling. Here are a few tips to put parents at ease and make conferences constructive: Be prepared. Know exactly what you want to discuss, and have a timeline to cover the essential topics. Provide parents evidence of their childrens progress and performance (e.g. a portfolio of recent work and test scores) to keep the conversation focused. Share efforts since your last meeting. If youve talked with parents previously about any issues, address what youve worked on since your last conversation/conference. Ask parents what theyve tried at home as well. Communicate your goals. Its not easy for parents to hear that their children are having problems. If you have to broach this topic, do so in an action-oriented, confident manner. Let parents know youre committed to helping their children, share your plans to do so and ask for their input. You might already know about some of the contributing factors that are causing a student to struggle. Making parents feel heard and understood will go a long way toward moving things in a positive direction. Listen well. Many parents expect you to do most of the talking during conferences, but its important to let them talk too. Ask if they have concerns or ideas as you approach the end of the year. This information will help you make arrangements for a smooth transition to the next grade and future teachers. After conferences, follow through with any next steps you discuss, whether thats connecting parents with additional school resources or executing an action plan to finish the year strong. 20 Tips for New Tutors (Part IV) - TutorNerds
20 Tips for New Tutors (Part IV) - TutorNerds Twenty Tips for New Tutors (Part IV) Twenty Tips for New Tutors (Part IV) Grades Shouldnât Be a Big Surprise You shouldnât be crossing your fingers that a student will do well on their upcoming test. If youâve been seeing them long enough to prepare for it, then you should give them practice quizzes or tests and grade them yourself to see how theyâre doing. Whether the practice test is something you found online, questions youâve made yourself, or just a few selected examples for their textbook, it usually isnât hard to come up with material to test your studentâs knowledge before an exam. This way, you and the student will have an idea where theyâre at before going to take the real thing. Learn Their Teacherâs Style After seeing some of your studentâs graded assignments from their class, you should be able to get a good idea of what their teacher is looking for. Maybe theyâre a huge stickler for vocab, or they require every equation to be memorized. Maybe they put more of an emphasis on style and sentence variety rather than spelling in grammar. Perhaps correct significant figures determine a large part of their grade. Maybe they donât care about the final answer as long as the work is correct and neat. All of these situations could be the opposite, and there are many other styles and priorities that teachers have. Recognize what your studentâs teacher is looking for early so that you can make your practice lessons more similar to their expectations. Stay in Touch Staying in touch with your client will help you build a better relationship and keep them feeling more satisfied with your commitment. This could mean following up to see how they did on a test, checking in to see what new classes they might be taking, or being available to help with simple questions via text or email outside of tutoring hours. Your level of involvement outside of working tutoring hours is up to you, but staying in touch more with your students tends to lead to better success for both student and tutor. Donât Let Tutoring Become Homework Time Helping with homework and assignments is a large and vital, part of most tutoring. However, if you are regularly seeing a student, your tutoring should not just be you going through each weekâs new homework assignment with them. At worst, you should transition them to doing the homework before you arrive so that you can focus on only the problems they didnât understand or got wrong. At best, they can complete the homework on their own so you can quickly check it if needed and focus on additional practice and lessons during the tutoring. There is nothing wrong with helping with homework, but regular tutoring should be more than just a tool for a student to use to get their homework done easily via professional help. Get Them Talking Many students will be quiet, shy, or just unwilling to open up about their struggles in class. A very important quality in a tutor is being charismatic and friendly enough to help these students feel comfortable opening up to you. Donât turn a tutoring lesson into a long casual chat, but also donât be so cold that you only focus on the academic work. If a student isnât comfortable talking to you, then it will be harder for you to know when they are confused and when they arenât paying attention. Read part three here! The Value in Taking Online Courses
The Value in Taking Online Courses Photo by Nick Morrison on Unsplash Have control of your own schedule One of the most promising aspects of online courses is that online courses allow you to have control of your own schedule as they are much more loosely scheduled than your typical class would be. Of course, you will still have the usual deadlines for quizzes, exams, papers, or discussion posts, but you wont have to go to a lecture at a set time several times a week when you might need to be somewhere else. Taking an online course allows you to adjust your schedule accordingly. For example, if you need to trade shifts at work to go home later in the week and the only shifts people are willing to give up when you would typically watch an online lecture, you can always find another time to study the lecture in order to pick up a shift. By taking an online course, you minimize the chances of having serious time conflicts and save yourself the trouble of picking if having a job or going to school is more important to you. If you are notorious for skipping your early morning classes because you cant find it in yourself to become a morning person, taking an online course eliminates that problem. If you know you work better at a certain time of the day, like nighttime, you can easily plan time during your nighttime routine for listening to online lectures. You get to decide when your class time is. Taking an online course also allows you to follow your own pace. If you hate going to lecture just because your professor is slow while going through a concept, trails off on a tangent too often, or doesnt stop to gauge the students level of understanding for the lectures content, you can listen to online lectures without worrying about that problem. Create your own learning environment When it comes to taking your typical college course, you may find yourself disliking whatever learning environment you are set in. You might prefer to learn in a smaller, more private area instead of the typical lecture hall, which can be full of distractions. The people around you could be in a full conversation, conflicting with whatever the professor is lecturing about. The person ahead of you can be online shopping or streaming something on Netflix, allowing your wandering eyes to take advantage from the lecture. If you are taking an online course, however, you get to decide what your learning environment will look like. Build your own distraction-free zone according to your taste. You can reserve a study room on campus to eliminate the possibility of a roommate barging in mid-lecture or you getting sleepy and taking a nap instead of sitting through a full lecture. If learning from the comfort of your own home is your best option, create a study space just like you would to crank out an essay or study for an exam. Turn your phone off or set it to the side, let your roommates know if you want to keep the noise level down, and whatever else you usually do to create a space you can be productive in. Test your self-control, or learn some While online courses may seem very promising, the idea of holding yourself accountable to follow a strict schedule on your own may seem daunting depending on the level of self-control you already have. Online courses give you plenty of freedom when it comes to deciding when and where you want to have class time, and that freedom comes with a large amount of responsibility when you are in charge of creating your own class schedule and studying schedule. You can build your own class and studying schedule, you are responsible for sticking to it. There is no strict attendance policy forcing you to go to set lecture times you just need to be strict with yourself to actually sit down for an online lecture when you plan to. This may seem like a little too much responsibility if you are the type to procrastinate on everything, but taking an online course is the perfect opportunity to learn how to practice self-control. When you have control over when you have class because of an online course and learn how to stick to the schedule you set in order to not fall behind, it will help you in other classes that arent online as you get to use the self-control youve learned to stay on top of other class schedules. When it comes to registering for next terms classes, consider registering for an online course if its offered for the classes you need. While unconventional, online courses have plenty of value, especially for busy college students that are seeking better control of their own schedule.
